Are you someone who always puts other people's needs before your own? This is known as being a people-pleaser, a common trait in personal and professional settings. Although it may seem like a positive quality, it can have a negative impact on your mental, physical, and spiritual health.


I talk to people pleasers daily and coach them on establishing healthier boundaries.


People-pleasers tend to display a range of behaviors that affect different aspects of their lives. Some of these behaviors include finding it hard to say no and constantly fearing rejection, ignoring their own needs and wants in their relationships and friendships, taking on too many responsibilities at work while seeking constant approval, and experiencing emotional patterns such as chronic guilt and low self-esteem.


Being someone who always tries to please others is not just a social trait; it can impact your health. These impacts can be seen in mental, physical, and spiritual health. In terms of mental health, constantly trying to make others happy can lead to stress, anxiety, burnout, and even resentment. In terms of physical health, it can cause fatigue, neglect of personal health, and stress-related issues. Finally, spiritual health can lead to losing personal values and beliefs and a feeling of disconnection from oneself.


Breaking free from people-pleasing involves self-reflection, setting boundaries, practicing saying no, prioritizing self-care, seeking support, and mindfulness. Changing from a people-pleaser to someone who can healthily assert themselves is a gradual but empowering process.
